This was a collaborative project between myself and Paul Savage. We was asked to take popular, lesser known or outright obscure ideas from sci-fi and invent new ways to make them tangible. Use any technology available and make them as real as you can. They were looking for creativity, a great demo, and a perfect blend of feasibility with future possibilities. Ultimately they were looking to you to bring that intangible dream into the tangible present.
NewsFeed
NEWSFEED
BRIEF
OVERVIEW
We took inspiration from the science fiction book ‘Vermillion Sands’ written by J.G Ballard where he writes about singing plants. The concept is that a household plant could be used to relay news headlines once it was watered by the user. The user would select the website they wanted to hear the content from and this request would be received by a Bluetooth receiver inserted into the pot. A water sensor in the pot would react when it comes in contact with water and prompt the website content to be relayed through a speaker to the user. To stop the user from over-watering the plant, we placed LED’s on the pot to inform them on whether the plant can be watered or not. A bang sensor inside the pot allows the user to stop the headlines by tapping the pot.
NEWSFEED PROTOTYPE
OVERVIEW
To follow on from the previous project, we decided to try and get the plant working. We decided to have the plant recite the voice of Robert Plant from Led Zeppelin singing ‘Whole Lotta Love’ without an instrumental. We Used Arduino, Processing, Moisture Sensor, Proximity Sensor & Led’s to create a working prototype of NewsFeed. The moisture sensor in the plant triggers the vocals within a certain range of moisture. This was a collaborative project between myself and Paul Savage.
